I’m not honestly sure whether this is allowed for a bigbang fic, because I’m not sure whether it’s supposed to be kept secret which stories are whose or whatever, but I talk about MYEYNL all the time anyway, so everyone knows that mine is the 200k+ fic with baby Millie in it, and OMG CAN I EVEN ARTICULATE HOW EXCITED I AM THAT LEPOMIERE IS MY ILLUSTRATOR BECAUSE EVEN HARRY LOVES HER ART, OKAY. So this is a little preview of the art that will be accompanying MYEYNL (aka Milliefic)! :)
Things that can and should be called “rape”:
- Nonconsensual sex
- Nonconsensual oral sex
- Nonconsensual digital or object penetration
- Sex, oral sex, or digital/object penetration while one or both parties were under the influence of inhibition-lowering drugs without their knowledge
- Sex, oral sex, or digital/object penetration while one or both parties were under the influence of inhibition-lowering drugs to an extent wherein they are physiologically and/or legally considered impaired
- Sex, oral sex, digital/object insertion, or genital touching of an underaged person by a legal/physiological adult.
Things that are absolutely not rape and which it demeans the survivors of actual rape and sexual assault if you refer to them as rape:
- Consensual sex
- Even consensual rough sex
- Even consensual rough sex involving dominance and submission
- Consensual oral sex
- Consensual digital/object penetration
- Pouncing on someone in a non-sexual manner or without violent intent
- Roughhousing
- Play-fighting
- Age gaps in relationships to which both parties are physiological and legal adults (yes, even if the woman is older!)
- Consensual frottage or implied frottage (“dry humping” and “air humping”)
- The sound of screaming in a YouTube video of a concert
- Consensual nipple-tweaking
- Consensual butt-grabbing or smacking
- Playful lovebites
- Any act which can be committed using the eyeballs (ie, eyeing someone up/staring intensely/”eyesex”)
- 90% of the things you’re calling “rape.”
And that goes double for “sending a lot of messages to someone’s Ask box.”
- Shipping something does not mean asserting to the mainstream public, or even the public of fandom, that it is the absolute truth (or even a relative truth).
- Saying that I ship or that I believe something in no way is an assertion that I believe it is the absolute truth. It is mainly because I read and write fanfiction, and there are ships that are easier and more comfortable to read and write in a natural and reflexive way than others.
- Shipping something is not making a comment, statement, or assertion on anyone’s real life experience. There are extraordinarily talented reader/writer/designers on Tumblr who ship characters who have never spoken or celebrities who have never met. It does not affect anyone’s real life experience, but also does not make their shipping invalid. One example would be Foxface/Thresh in The Hunger Games; see also Logan Lerman/Percy Jackson (yes, these fics exist and are good!) or Harry Styles/Nick Jonas. People can legitimately ship, with passion and without irony, ANYTHING THEY WANT (within the bounds of morality; ie, in this case in this fandom, don’t ship Harry and baby Lux, ffs). It does not mean they think it is — or should be — true.
- Slash shipping and feminism can absolutely coexist. As long as slash fic does not disenfranchise or erase the existence of women within a fandom and does not exacerbate or excuse offensive actions undertaken by males within a fandom, slash can be a highly feminist activity. The written-by-women-for-women-giving-ourselves-what-women-want model of fandom that is largely predicated by slash is a form of sexual revolution in women that is a hugely needed, and hugely positive, societal endeavor… considering women in mainstream society are seen only as sexually pursued, never pursuers, and are seen as hating arousing or erotic material. This isn’t the case. We just hate the kind that doesn’t acknowledge that women ARE people, and that includes bad slash that removes the agency of female entities within a given group.
- Slash shipping and respect for the LGBTQAIP community are not equal mirrors of each other. You can ship gay pairings and read only slash until the cows come home, but if you use homophobic slurs or fetishize the LGBTQAIP community to the point where we become accessories or stereotypes instead of relatable human characters, that is not being an ally. It’s wrong.
- SHIPPING IS NEVER MEANT TO BREAK THE FOURTH WALL. Personally, I have never, and would never, bring any kind of shipping — slash or otherwise — to the attention of the people it concerns. I don’t even like it when book authors read the fic I’ve written for their characters who DON’T EVEN ACTUALLY EXIST because it feels like it’s a breach of social contract. People who are being shipped in RPF (real person fic)/RPS (real person slash) SHOULD NEVER be contacted by fans about shipping. THAT is disrespectful, and breaks Point #3 — it starts to affect people’s real lives.
For example, in this fandom, the number of people who passionately ship Harry and Louis should never, in any way, have begun to affect how they actually live. Regardless what I think, regardless what you think, regardless what anyone thinks, it should never have become a way to bully Eleanor or send hardcore porn to Louis’ twitter or gay-bash Harry or even tweet “cute gay” messages to the boys. The trending topics on Louis’ birthday went way too far. Fandom is not the real world. Fandom is not the mainstream.
Just because a fandom decides that something is true, or that something is beloved, or that something is acceptable/accepted DOES NOT ACTUALLY MAKE THAT THE CASE. Causing a ship to be the major form of publicity that any person gets with the non-fandom general public affects real lives, and can cause a lot of headache, issues, and restrictions within the official publicity schema of that individual. “Rebelling against 1D’s management about Larry Stylinson” is NEVER okay. You may hate what you perceive is being said or done or allowed or disallowed, but whatever — if anything! — is the case, it is for a real, valid, real-world, non-fandom reason. Responsible shippers have to respect that.- Responsible, socially-minded shipping means being aware of the presentation of… well, everything… in the fic that you write, the way that you speak, even the graphics that you make or draw.
Fetishizing the idea of a stereotypical gay lifestyle is not being respectful of the LGBTQAIP community.
Co-opting kinks or “kink” lifestyles without any research or foreknowledge is disrespectful to the reality of people living those lives (ie, BDSM or D/s fic that clearly has no understanding or respect for how that community actually functions).
Negatively erasing, writing out, or “turning into villains” all of the females within a fandom to better enable a slash pairing is misogynistic — period. I don’t care how much you ship Larry Stylinson, you must respect Eleanor’s agency and value as a human being. The same goes for Danielle, or Caroline, or Emma Ostilly, or Perrie Edwards, or WHOEVER. Women do not turn into [insert misogynistic slur here] just because you want to make it easier to write two gay boys in love.
“Loving racism” is not a thing. The 1D fandom’s consistent characterization of Zayn’s father as a homophobe or describing Zayn as “the exotic, dark boy” because of their heritage/ethnicity/religion is gross. Saying that Liam has “jungle fever” is even more disgusting. Just don’t do it.
There is a difference between kink and psychopathology. Kinks are always okay. Psychopathologies are not, because they cause harm to the self and others. If you want to write about kinky sex, that’s awesome! Kinky sex is predicated by the idea of SSC — Safe, Sane, and Consensual. If it isn’t safe, sane, and consensual, it is not okay.- SHIPPING SOMETHING, AND EVEN GENUINELY BELIEVING SOMETHING TO BE TRUE WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF FANDOM, DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE ASSERTING THAT IT IS ACTUALLY TRUE IN THE REAL WORLD AND DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD CLAIM ANY KIND OF FAMILIARITY WITH THE PEOPLE/PERSON/CHARACTERS IN QUESTION AND INVOLVE THEM IN YOUR SHIPPING LIFE.
So when I say that I ship Harry and Louis, I do. I ship them because I find them fun, easy, and natural to write fic about; I enjoy reading other people’s interpretations of them. I think fanart of them is adorable. I also enjoy reading fic about Zayn and Liam; I don’t say that I ship them because I don’t think that there’s any likelihood or even possibility of Ziam being a real thing, AND BECAUSE I respect Danielle and like the way that she presents herself on Twitter, and I DO ship Liam and Danielle — insofar as that they are canon, I like that they are canon, and I think their relationship is adorable. As far as recognizing them to be canon, then, I would also have to say that I ship Louis and Eleanor. I wouldn’t write fic about them, but I don’t have to. Recognizing that they exist and that their relationship should be respected through my actions and words is enough.
“I ship it” basically means “I think this is adorable/hot/sexy/cute/snuzzly/cuddly.” “I believe this is true” means that “as far as I choose to believe, this seems like a logical plausibility and since I ship it, I’m gonna say that logical plausibility is good enough for me to believe in it to further my shipping.”
One Direction Infection Affects Bill Maher; He Makes a Joke About Shooting the Band:
One Direction has been dragged into the Trayvon Martin case in a bizarre way - Bill Maher made a joke about George Zimmerman shooting the British boy band on his HBO show… According to Mediaite, Here’s the joke Bill Maher made about the teen superstars:
“Now the other guy who had a good day today, George Zimmerman down in Florida, he got bail. Mr. George Zimmerman, he promised a judge, he said until the trial he promised not to shoot any unarmed teenagers. And the judge made an exception, he said, ‘For One Direction. If you want to shoot those kids, that’s fine.’”
The murder of an innocent child is never, ever a laughing matter. Threatening the lives of other innocent human beings is never, ever a laughing matter. Just your daily dose of “this world is disgusting,” it’s Feminist Harry Styles blog signing off for the day.
